Liverpool and Arsenal tie in the first leg of the Cup semi-finals

Despite being left with ten players soon due to the expulsion of Granit Xhaka, Arsenal resisted with a goalless draw (0-0) in their visit to Liverpool, this Thursday in the first leg of their English League Cup semi-final.

This result at Anfield leaves the tie open before the second leg, which is played on Thursday next week in London.

The other semifinal has already been decided. Chelsea, who had won 2-0 in the first leg, won 1-0 on Wednesday during their visit to Tottenham, to seal their ticket to the final on 27 February.

But to know the identity of his rival in that final at Wembley we will have to wait and the forecasts seem difficult between Arsenal and Liverpool, after what was seen in the first leg on Thursday.

Liverpool faced the fight with several casualties, due to injuries, covid and the Africa Cup of Nations. Arsenal also had absences, one of them last minute, that of the Norwegian Martin Odegaard, who tested positive for the coronavirus.

The arsenal's mission was complicated by the 24th minute with the expulsion of Xhaka. At a long ball from the 'Reds', the Swiss player tried to reach a ball, but his foot went into the belly of Diogo Jota, who was coming from behind. The referee took the direct red card, amid great protests from the 'Gunners'.

This numerical inferiority had the effect that Arsenal intensified its defensive efforts.

It was difficult for Liverpool to generate chances, missing figures such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané, who are with their national teams (Egypt and Senegal, respectively), in the Africa Cup in Cameroon.

Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino assumed the responsibility of supplying them, without luck. The Japanese player symbolized Liverpool's bad night, without being able to focus his shots between the three sticks.

Arsenal could even have won, but Alisson Becker prevented it, especially with an intervention in 72 against Bukayo Saka.
