Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal, 2019 Tour de France champion, announced his return to the famous race in 2022 after overcoming the physical ailments that deprived him fighting for the podium in the last two editions.

"It is clear that we are going to focus all our preparation and efforts thinking about competing in the Tour de France this year (2022)", said Bernal in conversation with Mundo Ciclístico magazine.

The 24-year-old rider has not appeared in the 'Grande Boucle' since 2020, when he was going after the defense of the title and had to leave due to severe pain in his back.

"I think I have fully recovered, but nevertheless we have been monitoring the evolution through sessions of physical therapy (and) strengthening assistance to the gym," launched Bernal.

I hope "to start the cycling year and continue without anything that could affect performance on the bike," he added.

"It is time to return to return to the path that we found in 2019 and from which we have separated a bit," said the 'young wonder'.

In his absence, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) claimed the two consecutive titles in the most important race on the cycling calendar.

Bernal's return to the French roads may mark the long-awaited hand-in-hand between the Slovenian and the Colombian, considered the new phenomena of cycling.

The Tour de France-2022 will begin on July 1 with an individual time trial stage in Copenhagen and will end on July 24 on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

The Bogota-born is the only Latin American who has won the Tour de France.
