Alejandro Valverde will retire in Lombardy

Team Movistar revealed the calendar with the last competitions of the Spaniard as a professional

The Spanish Alejandro Valverde, world champion in 2018, will end his career as a professional cyclist on October 8 at the Giro de Lombardía, announced his Movistar and Twitter.

"Alejandro Valverde will play his last tests as a professional cyclist in Italy for the next two weeks," explained the sports team.

Valverde will be on September 29 at the Coppa Agostini, on October 1 at the Giro de Emilia, over the Tres Valles Varesinos on October 4 and at the Giro de Lombardía on October 8.

"It is time to enjoy and thank, one last time," wrote the Movistar formation on its Twitter social network account.

Throughout his 21-year career, Valverde has managed to win the Tour of Spain (2009) and four editions of the Liège-Bastoña-Liège monument (2006, 2008, 2015 and 2017).

In addition, he won five editions of the classic Flecha Wallona (2006, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) and was world road champion in 2018.

This September the Spanish rider ran his last Vuelta a España, finishing 13th, 25 minutes and 39 seconds behind the Belgian winner, Remco Evenepoel.
