triple play for beginners

While you bother to read this Friday's Tripleplay, 124 pitchers born in Venezuela have ever pitched in the major leagues.

Did you know that six of them have reached a hundred or more wins? They are in order of wins:

  • Felix Hernandez 169
  • Freddy Garcia 156
  • Johan Santana 139
  • Carlos Zambrano 132
  • Hannibal Sanchez 112
  • Wilson Alvarez 102

In the memoirs of the big top, which exceed a hundred seasons, did you know that twenty-three perfect games have been completed? The authors have been:

  • Lee Richmond in 1880
  • Mount Ward in 1880
  • Cy Young in 1904
  • Addie Joss in 1908
  • Charlie Robertson in 1922
  • Don Larsen in 1956
  • Jim Bunning in 1964
  • Sandy Kufax in 1965
  • Catfish Hunter in 1968
  • Len Barker in 1981
  • Mike Witt in 1984
  • Tom Browning in 1988
  • Dennis Martinez in 1991
  • Kenny Rogers in 1994
  • David Wells in 1998
  • Dave Cone in 1999
  • Randy Johnson in 2004
  • Mark Buehrle in 2009
  • Dallas Braden in 2010
  • Roy Halladay in 2010
  • Philip Humber in 2012
  • Matt Cain in 2012
  • Felix Hernandez in 2012

Nicaraguan Dennis Martínez and Venezuelan Félix Hernández are the only Latin Americans in the elite group.

And keeping with the brevity of events in the big leagues despite the time that has elapsed, did you know that only one pitcher has gone no-hitters and no-runs in consecutive starts? This is Johnny Vander Meer, who achieved the feat between June 11 and 15, 1938.

On June 11 with the Cincinnati Reds facing the Boston Braves at home. He struck out four, walked three and faced 28 batters. Cincinnati prevailed 3 0.

On the 15th against the Dodgers in Brooklyn, Vander Meer struck out seven and walked eight batters. He faced 35 sluggers. The Reds triumphed 6 to 0. The lefty finished that year 1938 with a record of 15 wins and 10 losses and an ERA of 3.12.

And in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, which opened its doors in 1947, do you know the names and surnames of the four pitchers with the most total victories until the 2022 campaign? They are the privileged ones:

  • José “Carrao” Bracho with 109 victories
  • Diego continued with 95
  • Luis Penalver with 84
  • Luis Leal with 71

By any chance, do you remember the names of the two pitchers, imported by mere coincidence, with the most strikeouts in a single campaign? The left-hander Bo Belinski has, who guillotined 156 batters in the 1961-1962 season with Pampero.

The record for a single challenge is 21 strikeouts, set by Lew Krausse in the 1965-1966 season against the Cardenales de Lara with the uniform of the Leones del Caracas.
