Cañas assumed the reins of the Andean team in January of this year during a transition period of his board. Therefore, the squad had a short preseason and still qualified for the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana.
José Alí Cañas leaves the academic team in tenth position in the local tournament with 17 points. In international competition he did not score points in four games played.
This is the first movement that Estudiantes de Mérida makes in the current national soccer transfer market.
