Controversy with Spanish players bites and spreads

21 of the 23 world champions believe that the changes have not been enough

The new coach of the Spanish women's team, Montse Tomé, had to delay announcing the call for their first matches because her players still refused to return.

The Federation indicated that this Friday the players rejected their attempts to convince them to return to the team.

This left Tomé with the difficult decision of whether to call up the rebelling players or select a completely different team for the upcoming Nations League matches against Sweden and Switzerland, on September 22 and 26, respectively. He preferred to wait.

The Spanish team has just become world champions, but a kiss ruined their celebration and unleashed a whole fight for the rights of the players. Luis Rubiales, then president of the Federation, kissed the player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony and sparked a great controversy that led to her resignation.

The 23 selected, along with a dozen other players, responded by announcing that they would not play for the national team until the Federation implemented reforms. Rubiales resigned, but that was not enough.

21 of the 23 world champions, through the FUTPRO union, published a statement on Friday explaining that “the changes that have occurred are not enough.”
