Newcastle returned to victory against Brentford

The 'Magpies' had not won in the League since the first match against Aston Villa

Newcastle United returned to winning ways this Saturday, by defeating Brentford 1-0 in St. James Park for the fifth day of the English Premier League and the first after the recently concluded FIFA date.

Callum Wilson; who recently renewed his contract, scored the only goal of the game from a penalty in the 64th minute, to give the 'Magpies' their first victory after three league games in which they only knew defeat.

Newcastle had not won since beating Aston Villa 5-1 on August 12 and had since lost to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.

However, this win should help boost confidence ahead of the team's Champions League opener against Italy's AC Milan on Tuesday.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken's clumsy attack on Anthony Gordon. Wilson, who was made to wait before the charge, shot high to the left of Flekken to open the scoring.

He thought he had been awarded another penalty later when Harvey Barnes' header hit Bryan Mbeumo's arm. But referee Craig Pawson overturned the decision when asked to review the incident.

In the rest of the day

  • Aston Villa 3-1 Newcastle
  • Manchester United 1-3 Brighton
  • West Ham 1-3 Manchester City
  • Tottenham 2-1 Sheffield United
  • Fulham 1-0 Luton Town
