Ilkay Gundogan scored a brace — his first after 13 seconds into the game, the fastest goal in an FA Cup final in 142 years of history — to lift City to their 16th trophy since 2011.
If the German goal was City's best goal, his 51st-minute shot for victory could be considered one of his most sloppy after he caught a cross from Kevin De Bruyne with a free kick and volleyed the ball between two. United defenders and goalkeeper David De Gea.
United pressed late and Raphael Varane hit the crossbar. The team needs a favor from Inter Milan in the European club championship final on June 10 in Istanbul to avoid City's treble.
After the final whistle the City players ran to the center of the field and jumped for joy in front of their fans who waved blue and white flags of the team's colours.
At the center of the celebrations was Gundogan, who could leave the club after the Champions League final as his contract expires. He would leave as one of the greats of the team.
