Julián Álvarez will continue with City until 2028

The player became one of the most desired figures in Europe after the World Cup

Manchester City extended Julián Álvarez's contract until 2028 in recognition of his great season and winning the World Cup with Argentina, the Premier League club announced Thursday.

Despite playing in the shadow of Norwegian Erling Haaland, the 23-year-old River Plate-trained striker has scored 10 goals in 33 games played (counting all competitions) this season, his first in England.

The 'Spider' also had a great impact at the World Cup in Qatar in December, where he became a key player in the title won with the Albiceleste with four goals, two of them scored in the semifinal match against Croatia.

Arrived barely half a year ago to Manchester, Álvarez had signed a contract until 2027, which is why the agreement is increased by one year, which is also accompanied by a significant increase in the player's salary, according to the English press.

“This is a proud moment for me and my family. That a club like City puts its faith in me is something incredible", declared the striker in the entity's statement.

“I am very happy with my first season here, but I can give much more. I know I can be better and City offer me everything I need to reach my full potential”, he added.

For his part, City sports director Txiki Begiristain highlighted: "We saw at the World Cup what a special talent he is (...) His progress has been fantastic, but he is focused on improving further to become one of the best forwards in world football" .
