Diego Godín arrived in Vélez thinking about Qatar

The Uruguayan defender signed a contract with the Argentine club until the end of 2023

The veteran Uruguayan defender and captain of La Celeste, Diego Godín, stated this Thursday that joining Vélez Sarsfield It will allow him to maintain the rhythm of the game for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

«It is an intense League (Argentina), there are many competitive teams. I was told that this is the ideal team. And for me, it is to be able to have continuity and get to the World Cup at a good pace, which is what I also want », he said when he was presented as a reinforcement of Fortín at the José Amalfitani stadium.

After disassociating himself from Atlético Mineiro, he said about his arrival in Vélez: «They have received me spectacularly. It is obvious that there is a large family. A pleasant work environment. Very nice energy."

The 36-year-old "Pharaoh" Godín admitted that he was used to suffering "few injuries, thank God," but recalled that this year patellar tendonitis took away his continuity in the game.

"I want to be well to enter the field, according to what the coaching staff considers," he said when speaking in the conference room of the José Amalfitani stadium in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Liniers.

Godín commented that "he had been dragging tendinitis, playing and stopping, just when it was life or death" to achieve Uruguay's pass to the World Cup, an objective achieved almost at the end of the South American qualifying round.

"I come to Vélez because I love football," said the defender, who signed a contract until the end of 2023.
