Miggy blows out a candle for home run number 500

He gave the historic shot before a change of speed by Steven Matz, of the Blue Jays

Miguel Cabrera (Miggy) is celebrating a year today of having joined the exclusive group of gunners who have hit half a thousand home runs in the history of Major League Baseball.

It was on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in a game that his Detroit Tigers played as visitors against the Blue Jays at the Rogers Center in the city of Toronto.

At the top of the sixth inning, after Robbie Grossman grounded the first out to third, Cabrera took the ball deep to center-right on left-hander Steven Matz's third pitch to level the score at one. career and become the twenty-eighth slugger with half a thousand homers in the major leagues.

Entering the 2021 season, Miggy had managed to bill 487 boards in his first 18 seasons. But injuries had led him to noticeably decrease home run production with just 31 full-return shots in three contests between 2017 and 2019, after he had hit 446 in his first 14 contests with the Marlins (2003-07) and Bengals (2008- 16).

The 14 spectators who attended the historic match in which he hit the 865th home run to help the Tigers beat the Blue Jays 500 runs to 5 in eleven innings, gave the Maracay slugger a standing ovation from the very moment that “ hooked” Matz's pitch to him, a changeup that went a little high and wide.

Five years of drought had the list of gunners with at least half a thousand homers. Cabrera was the first to register since Dominican David Ortiz signed up in 27th place on September 12, 2015, with the Red Sox, against Rays pitcher Matt Moore, in a game held at Tropicana Field in Tampa.

Cabrera was the sixth Latino baseball player to reach 500 full-circuit swings.

Before they got it the Dominican Sammy Sosa, of the Chicago Cubs, on April 4, 2003, against the Reds, in Cincinnati; Cuban Rafael Palmeiro, with the Rangers, on May 11, 2003, against the Cleveland Indians, in Arlington; the Dominican Manny Ramírez, of the Boston Red Sox, on May 31, 2008, against the Orioles in Baltimore, and the Dominican Albert Pujols, who points towards 700 wood strikes these days with San Luis, gave the number 500, with the Los Angeles Angels on April 22, 2014 against the Nationals at the United States capital diamond.
