David Price will have surgery this week

The sore wrist that Red Sox starter David Price has had for several months will be completely gone by Spring Training.

The Puerto Rican manager of the Red Sox, Alex Cora, announced Sunday that Price will undergo surgery on Thursday to fix the ailment.

After a cyst developed on his wrist in July, Price tried to pitch through the discomfort, but his performance suffered. The left-hander pitched just two innings for Boston after Aug. 4.

From the start of the season through July 14, Price was arguably the Red Sox's most reliable starter, going 7-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 17 appearances. In his last five starts, he was 0-3 with a 9.47 ERA.

Despite the surgery, Price would be able to go through his offseason workouts with no problem.

"I think it was best to treat him as soon as possible so he can have a normal offseason," Cora added. “He will be able to take care of himself and be ready for next year.”

The Red Sox and Price will have a clear idea of recovery time after the operation. MLB
