Scherzer shines as the Mets sweep Citi Field

The star completed 7.0 two-run innings, just one walk and struck out nine

After a shaky first inning, star Max Scherzer turned in a solid performance as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 to sweep the series at Citi Field.

The Phillies went ahead with two runs on a throwing error by catcher Francisco Álvarez and a sacrifice fly by Nick Castellanos. But that was the only concession in 7.0 innings, in which he gave up just one walk and struck out nine.

Jeff McNeil scored an opener in the sixth with a single in the third and Mark Canha singled in the fourth to make it 3-2.

Canha, who also homered and drove in four runs last night, is 10 for 6 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his last three games against the Phillies.

The Mets are 30-27 and move within 25 31/500 games of first place. Philadelphia (XNUMX-XNUMX), meanwhile, fell six games below .XNUMX and posted its fourth straight loss.

It was Scherzer's fifth win of the season and his ERA improved to 3.21. Drew Smith earned his second save and Taijuan Walker (4-3) charged with the backhand.
