Estudiantes sentenced Táchira on penalties

Beycker Velásquez became the figure of the game by blocking the first two charges of the aurinegro

Estudiantes de Mérida beat Deportivo Táchira 3-1 this Wednesday in a penalty shootout, after a 90-minute draw by the minimum. The rojiblancos advance to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana-2023.

Junior Paredes equalized for Estudiantes in minute 87. And goalkeeper Beycker Velásquez became the star of the game by blocking the first two penalties for the aurinegro, taken by Diomar Díaz and Edder Farías.

The Paraguayan Alexis Doldán, the Panamanian Ervin Zorrilla and Jorge Páez converted their penalties to seal, together with Velásquez, the academic victory.

The Argentine Gonzalo Ritacco was the only footballer who successfully executed for Táchira, who had gone ahead in the 25th minute with a goal from Yerson Chacón.

Estudiantes joins Academia Puerto Cabello as the only two Venezuelan teams to see action in the group stage.
