Colombia vs Ecuador: A heads up for qualification

Colombia will have double motivation when they host Ecuador on Thursday in a new day of the South American qualifiers heading to Qatar 2022.

The Colombians want to get even for the humiliating 6-1 thrashing they suffered against Ecuador in November last year. But even more importantly, a victory could leave them in third place in the South American table.

Only the top four will qualify directly for Qatar 2022. Brazil and Argentina are well profiled in that direction by accumulating 28 and 22 points, respectively.

The rest have a close fight for the other two direct tickets.

Prior to match 12, Ecuador is third with 16 points and thanks to the goal difference they are ahead of Uruguay, which has the same amount.

They are followed by Colombia (15), Paraguay (12), Peru (11), Chile (10), Bolivia (9) and Venezuela (7).

The Rueda players believe that the duel against Ecuador will be an early final due to the World Cup ticket.

“It will be a complex match due to the characteristics of the rival and the setting, which is special, playing in Barranquilla early, where the temperature also plays its part (over 30 degrees Celsius)”, considered, for his part, the coach from Ecuador, Gustavo Alfaro.

Colombia comes from reaping two separate draws 0-0, visiting Uruguay and against Brazil.

Ecuador, on the other hand, has just taken a false step by losing 2-1 to Venezuela in Caracas on Sunday, days after beating Bolivia 3-0 in Guayaquil.

Colombia and Ecuador have met 19 times for the World Cup qualifiers. Colombia has won eight times, Ecuador five and the rest have been draws.
